What Christmas Should Not Be?

by Julie Anne Hood
It shouldn’t be the lights outside that twinkle off and on,
It shouldn’t be the sets we see that’s set up on the lawn.

It shouldn’t be the Christmas reef that’s hanging on the door,
It shouldn’t be the Christmas tree that’s standing on the floor.

It shouldn’t be that angel rare that’s robed in royal white,
It shouldn’t be the star on top that sheds its eerie light.

It shouldn’t be the popcorn that is wrapped around the tree,
It shouldn’t be the tinsel that’s hung, “Oh so carefully”.

It shouldn’t be the colored lights that sparkle through the night,
It shouldn’t be the ornaments that catch each ray of light.

It shouldn’t be the stockings that’s hung on the mantle piece,
It shouldn’t be the cards that’s sent in love and worldly peace.

It shouldn’t be the Santa Claus who laughs so much with glee,
It shouldn’t be the presents sitting ‘round the Christmas tree.

It’s more than a figure scene of Christ born in a stable,
It’s more that a choir singing, or food on the table.

Christmas is a time for thinking about our God above,
Jesus, Who left His heavenly home  to come to earth in love.

In love He came as a small babe, in love He lived His life,
In love He died upon a cross to give eternal life.

So when you celebrate Christmas, recall who it’s about,
For there’s no meaning to Christmas when Jesus is left out!
"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and
they will call him Immanuel" —which means,
"God with us."
Matthew 1:22-24
